The Down Syndrome Association of Miami (DSAOM) held their Second Annual Miracle Walk in Coral Gables on Sunday, October 12, 2008. The Walk, which will benefit the DSAOM, began at 9 AM at Ponce Circle Park, following opening ceremonies featuring remarks from Mayor Slesnick and TV personalities, and presentation of the colors and the singing of the National Anthem by the Knights of Columbus Coral Gables Council. Knights of Columbus also assisted with event planning, set up, cooking and serving hotdogs for all participants, and site clean up. "Since the Down Syndome Association of Miami was founded, the Coral Gables Knights have been supportive, providing the organization meeting space in our hall and supporting thier activities," remarked Grand Knight Dr. Javier Maribona. "Their mission of providing support to parents of children with Down Syndrome and assisting them in identify programs and healthcare providers to meet their children's special needs is an important service that we Knights of Columbus take pride in supporting."
The 2009 Miracle Walk was supported by more than 2,000 walkers, community leaders and advocates, countless online donors, more than 40 “Platinum” and “Gold” level corporate sponsors, and several community volunteers. The Miracle Walk was featured in the Miami Herald and CBS 4 News. Last year’s Miracle Walk was featured in public service announcements and PodCasts, the Miami Herald, and CBS 4 News.
